Students read Old Norse poetry (The Eddaic poems) and work on projects that aim to enhance their understanding of ancient history and society. In addition, students analyse medieval literature in order to understand whether it has relevance in the present day. Students read Nordic mythology and get acquainted with the mythology of Nordic people in the past. Students carry out creative tasks based on mythology and need to utilize information technology to complete their projects. Students work on both verbal and written assignments; students analyse texts and form an understanding of it based on their own experiences and ideas. They get acquainted with art and multimedia content, which is course specific, as well as content on the Internet. Students read modern short stories, discuss them and gain insight into the basic concepts of literature.

The final grade of the course is based on final exam and variety of assignments such as a wide range of written tasks, group work and presentation. There are also tests based on content material.

In the course, emphasis is placed on developing students´ reading skills and how to express themselves both orally and in writing. Students study syntax, as they analyse with the aim to understand the division of texts into sentence structures. Students also study the use of punctuation marks. The history of language and culture will be discussed from early centuries until modern times. The history of the Icelandic language, language changes and the relationship with other languages will be discussed. Students attend lectures, work on projects and hand in written assignments. Spelling exercises, which focus on particular grammar, are frequent and students learn the corresponding grammar rules. Once a week there are progressive training lessons which focus on oral expression. Students read one Icelandic novel and work on individual assignments as well as group assignments.

The final grade of the course is based on a final exam and variety of assignments such as a wide range of tasks based on oral expression, spelling and writing skills.

Students read an Icelandic saga and work on projects that aim to enhance their understanding of the Icelandic language and society in the past. During their reading, emphasis is placed on the interaction of the characters in the saga as expressed in their personal relationships, feuds and ambitions. Students acquire skills in reading and understanding medieval texts and study the origin of this genre. Students read a modern Icelandic novel, work on various writing assignments and write an article based on an interview.

The final grade of the course is based on a variety of assignments and smaller exams. Students do not take a final exams at the end of the semester.

In the course, students read novels, scholarly texts and poems by prominent poets and writers of the 20th and 21st century. While reading the course materials, emphasis is placed on a variety of project work and students work on both verbal and written assignments. Students enhance their ability to write an essay in an independent and professional manner. There are also a number of projects where students enhance their ability to work on creative projects. Students are expected to work in an independent manner.
